An Inspired Barnwood Potting Bench

June 2, 2013 by Barb 11 Comments

wildflower bouquet

Yesterday I headed outside, fully intending to cut the grass.

Strangely, though, I found myself over by my new potting bench… it has become a magnet for me.

I think I’ve been dreaming about having a potting bench my whole life, and I’ll tell you how it came about. Last summer I wrote down in my journal that I would have one. Then I pinned a couple ideas, and voila…

potting bench

I’m a firm believer that if you write something down, there’s a better chance of it coming true. There are tons of books written about that theory but for the life of me I can’t remember where I read it first. I think it was Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach, or The Artists Way, by Julia Cameron.

Right now I’m reading The Secret, which of course teaches about the law of attraction. But I digress.

potting bench

So, early this spring I was at my favourite little country store which I frequent on a monthly basis. It’s there that I’ve been scooping up rustic, custom-made barnwood benches by the handful… I can’t resist them. Each one is so unique, with different colours of lichen clinging to them.

potting bench

Anyway, I simply asked the owner if the fellow who makes these benches would consider making a potting bench. She replied; not for the shop, but here’s his number. Hmmmm, I was expecting her to take an order or something. But I took it and ran.

After that it was just a series of fortunate events.

I called and asked this fellow if he would consider making one for me. He replied; well, I’ve never even thought of making a potting bench, but here’s what I think: it should be about 5 feet in height, 44-45 inches wide, with a 21 inch deep counter. Add a small shelf in the top part, and a large shelf on the bottom.

Ummm, well, OK (said I) as I crumpled up the little scrap of paper with all my measurements written on it … I could see there was no need to tell him what to do! But what would it cost me?

Well, this is just a hobby for me (said he) but I’d have to charge you $115.00…

… gasp… seriously people, I know of some places that would not charge any less than $250.00… I mean, this thing weighs a ton… and look at the colours of these fabulous lichens!

potting bench

… and it holds a lot of heavy pots, and gardening essentials…

potting bench

potting bench

It was here that I created my little cottage garden/wildflower bouquet. Could there be anything more charming?

So if you are dreaming of a potting bench, or anything else for that matter, I would advise you to get out your journal, or even just a scrap of paper and write it down.

I feel so inspired.

Oh, and yes, I did cut the grass.

Friday Finds, and a Little “Find” for You!

May 23, 2013 by Barb 14 Comments

simplicity, simple life, friday finds, kim klassen, barb blookbank

There’s a new meme in town! Friday Finds, hosted by Kim Klassen.

She has invited us to share something that we find each week. It can be anything; from antiques, to flowers, to… whatever!

Magically (it seems), our trees and perennials are starting to bloom, so of course, flowers were an obvious choice. Walking around the yard, I caught a soft, sweet, light scent on the breeze and followed it to our Mayday tree. One quick snip with my shears, and I headed back to the house to look for the perfect vase.

A simple glass jar that had once served as a soap dispenser was hiding under the sink. A perfect “find” don’t you think? I love the cone shape, the small size, and the smooth ridges of glass. Sweet and simple. Love!

After editing the image, and adding texture, etc. it just seemed natural to add a little quote, which I then made into a sweet little graphic. Goodness, when we love doing something we “find” the time, don’t we…

So now, I have a “Friday Find” for you! I’ve made the quote available for you to download! I hope you like it!

life-is-really-simple-brush

The word art is a brush in .abr format, which can be used in Photoshop Elements, or Photoshop.

Simply click on the graphic above to download. If you have any questions/problems please ask them in the comment section so others can read them and perhaps find help too.

See you tomorrow at Friday Finds, with Kim Klassen dot com

Willow Catkins and the Art of Avoidance

May 9, 2013 by Barb 8 Comments

willow-catkins-2

Today I woke up early, enjoyed my coffee, checked e-mails, poked around some blogs, primped my own blog, ate French toast for breakfast, and had a nap.

willow-catkins

I walked down to the lake’s edge and sat and listened to the birds. Geese, ducks, seagulls, and loons. It’s a regular cacaphony of hoots, cackles, and wails (got that from the dictionary).

willow-catkins-1

I admired the willow catkins that seem to glow in the sunlight. Then of course I had to pick a few which I spent an hour arranging and photographing.

Which brings me to the question “when am I going to start preparing for that dinner party for 8 that we’re hosting on Saturday?” Egad. I truly wish I could walk into the sunset and leave that one behind. But I cannot. Tomorrow I start.

Pansies, Greenhouses, and the Smell of Spring

April 30, 2013 by Barb 13 Comments

pansy, garden quote, kim klassen, barb brookbank, texture, texture tuesday

Yesterday it snowed. Lots. It was actually a mini-blizzard.

As I sat at the computer trying to work, my mind kept wandering. Something was calling to me… something bright, warm, and filled with flowers.

I knew what I had to do. I had to finish up a draft of my next tutorial and send it off to be approved. Then I would have to wait, wouldn’t I? The person who approves it is halfway across the world in Australia and was probably still asleep. This would give me a few hours where I could do whatever I wanted… so off I went…

the big, greenhouse

 ah, yes… welcome, indeed

I spent about an hour walking up and down the aisles, dreaming and scheming. When I looked around at other people, they all had a hint of a smile on their face. The saleswoman was wearing a tank top! Oh, now doesn’t she have the best job in the world!? And the smell… the smell of soil after a rain… gah, it gave me shivers…

It’s too early to buy anything for the garden, but I could indulge in one little pot of sweet smelling pansies. It’s now sitting on a rough little wooden bench in my kitchen where the sun pours in all afternoon.

After I left the greenhouse, I headed to my favourite junque shop and stocked up on… (oops, that’s for another post).

I’m joining in on the fun at Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen. Today we were to use any of Kim’s textures and add some wise words. Well, I’m not so wise, but I loved the quote.

Simplicity

April 25, 2013 by Barb 8 Comments

picsplay, desert marigold, kim klassen, texture

As I have said before “I need flowers”. However, our holidays are quickly coming to an end and I didn’t want to spend any money on a bouquet that I was going to have to either give away, or (heaven forbid!) throw away. So off I went in search of wildflowers. These charming Desert Marigolds are growing on the roadsides all over Fountain Hills and I didn’t think it would be a problem if I snipped a few and brought them in to grace our humble abode.

This morning I set them on the little antique chest that has become our coffee table. I love it’s rough texture and peeling paint and the fact that at a certain time the sun streams in and hits it on the corner, creating a perfect sunbeam. No fake Photoshop sunbeam here (although I am not above that).

I snapped the photo with my iPhone and took it into #PicsPlay where I added a filter and the text. Then I added one layer of kk_subtlyyours by Kim Klassen.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful Thursday!! Yes, yes, I’m late to the party! :)

My apologies for re-posting this… there were some error messages with the first one and I’m trying to figure out what it was. Thanks so much for your patience. I saved all the comments from the previous post (I treasure and appreciate all of them).

A Sun-Dappled Patio

April 20, 2013 by Barb 14 Comments

geraniums-on-patio

We enjoyed a relaxing hour or so while having lunch on the patio at “The House of Tricks” in downtown Tempe near the popular Mill Avenue. Protected from the sun by a leafy canopy and surrounded by pots of flowers, it’s a quiet oasis that makes a person want to linger. It makes you want to savour every bite, talk about life, and sip slowly on your beverage of choice. Ours was coffee; aromatic and flavourful, poured from little decanters and served in tiny mismatched teacups.

It stirred some distant memory or feeling in me that I can’t quite explain. Probably just a combination of all the summer days of my life and the gratefulness I feel when sitting on a deck surrounded by flowers, friends, and family. Whatever it was, it’s elusive so I’m going to leave it at that. I would highly recommend this restaurant, not just for the atmosphere but also for the food. I ate so much that I skipped dinner last night and at the time of this writing I’m still not ready for breakfast!

Just Another Day in Arizona

April 18, 2013 by Barb 8 Comments

Palm-Trees-AZ

Today we spent most of the day at our local park. We found a spot on the grass, set up our little picnic area and enjoyed a delicious lunch of homemade chicken sandwiches and fresh fruit. When we finished, the boys went to play on the slides and us adults sat and relaxed for a bit.

It wasn’t long until I wandered off to “take photos” and came back with some lattés and cinnamon coffee cake. It just doesn’t get any better, I tell ya!

Hubby and I have so enjoyed having our family with us and we are really, really going to miss them. I feel teary remembering the ginormous hugs that we received at the airport when we picked them up a week ago (I was almost toppled over by a 3-year-old). And now, already, we are soon going to be saying our good-byes. It’s going to be pretty quiet when we get back to our condo (except for the snores).

A Big Day at the Zoo–It Was a Tall Order

April 16, 2013 by Barb 7 Comments

giraffe

Today we spent five hours with our daughter and grandsons at the zoo and we had a blast! There’s an incredible amount to see, from scorpions to rattle snakes, to jaguars. I have dozens of photos to process but I’m going to have to leave you with this giraffe I captured on my iPhone. There’s only so much I can cram in into one day…

I Dream of Flowers

April 1, 2013 by Barb 28 Comments

tulips, spring

Last week, as I prepared for the Easter weekend, I indulged myself once again and bought some flowers.

These tulips were tightly closed but I could see a hint of green mixed in with the pink petals.

Tulips-Pink-Frilly1

They were irresistible.

I could tell that the flowers were going to be frilly, and before I knew it I had put two bunches in my cart.

Tulips-Pink-Frilly3

I did a bit of research on double tulips and read that they are sometimes referred to as peony tulips. I can certainly see why. These remind me of the pink peonies that grace my garden around the beginning of July… am I dreaming? Umm, yes. But what a wonderful dream.

Tulips-Pink-Frilly4

A tulip doesn’t strive to impress anyone.

It doesn’t struggle to be different than a rose.

It doesn’t have to.

It is different.

And there’s room in the garden for every flower”

Some of my favourite things

November 19, 2012 by Barb 7 Comments

Jo-Anna at A Pretty Life is hosting a “Favourite Things” party today to coincide with Oprah’s “Favorite Things 2012“.

I pondered all day on what would be on my favourite’s list – knowing full well that whatever was on it could possibly be interpreted as a Christmas Wish List (ahem).

I don’t have a huge list. I seem to have everything I need. Of course I always enjoy gifts and gadgets – who doesn’t?

So here are some of my favourite things – most I have already – some I don’t…

  1. Somerset Magazines – most notably “Artful Blogging”, “Somerset Life”, and “Digital Studio”. I’ve been buying Somerset publications for years and years – it goes back to my card making and stamping days. I scour Chapters and Michaels and Walmart hoping to find the latest issues–all the while muttering to myself “I should just get a subscription!”
  2. My Kobo that hubby bought for me a few months ago when I mentioned that I would like one for Christmas–how sweet was that? I recently downloaded and read “Heaven is Here”, and book about an extremely brave woman–I couldn’t get her story out of my head. She actually has a blog “Nie Nie Dialogues“. Right now I’m reading “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. It’s a pretty good read. There’s a quote in it that stopped me in my tracks (but I won’t write about that right now). It’s super convenient to find a book online and download it–plus I really like how I can set the size of the font to accommodate my baby boomer eyes.
  3. Crocs. I have had my Crocs for ten years. I’ve worn them so much there is no tread left… (size 7) (ahem).
  4. Body shop bath milk–there’s nothing like it.
  5. Six Feet Under. “A drama series that takes a darkly comical look at members of a dysfunctional California family that runs an independent funeral home”. I feel like I know these people and I don’t want the series to end. (oh, and don’t watch it with your children or your parents).
  6. Sally Harmon piano music. I have it all. I’ve listened to it a thousand times–especially “A Cozy Christmas”. I love to get up in the morning, get my coffee and sit in the dark looking at the Christmas tree while listening to that relaxing music.
  7. Starbucks. Not just Starbucks, but the experience of going to a Starbucks/Chapters, getting a latte and wandering around the store looking at books. I still do like the real thing.
  8. I also love my iPod. It has brought the world of Instagram and Itunes into my life–such a blessing.
Well, I enjoyed myself! Hope you did! Is it too early to say “Merry Christmas”?! Don’t answer that!

5 on Friday – Using a Gradient to Fade Colour

November 16, 2012 by Barb 15 Comments

This photo is a scan of the house that I grew up in. I used a technique with a gradient to fade the colour from left to right.

FarmhouseChristmas1980

For ‘5 on Friday’ I decided to list 5 things that I want to get accomplished today, or at least get a start on….

  1. Make my Christmas wreath–I have a great new idea this year. You’d think a person would run out of wreath ideas – but not so with Pinterest at their fingertips!
  2. Sort and organize my Christmas stuff before I go out and buy new stuff which is the same as the old stuff that I already have.
  3. Make Nuts and Bolts–my fav treat of the season.
  4. Link up to ‘Beyond Layers’ day 85. I used ‘Kristin’ on this photo of the house where I grew up. I also practiced the technique that Kim taught this week. I have to say I love the results of this one.
  5. Visit our country store–if, for nothing else, the drive.

Where I blog and what would I be doing if I wasn’t blogging

November 14, 2012 by Barb 9 Comments

Well, I missed TT yesterday. I had an assignment that needed to be done and to tell you the truth my creative juices are not flowing. And yet I’m still creating. How can that be?

I think I have too many creative ‘shoulds’ in my life. As I was lying in bed last night I fell asleep wondering what would I be doing if I wasn’t blogging or planning a blog post, and what would I be doing if I wasn’t working on an assignment for my scrapping duties.

Don’t get me wrong – I love doing both and I’m grateful that I have these interests and am able to pursue them. There are some mornings I can’t wait to get up and get started on a project that was simmering while I slept–and I don’t expect things to change.

I just have this question lurking in the background lately when I’m doing a project–is this what I want to be doing?

I guess what it boils down to is that some days I’m on fire, and some days I’m just showing up. And showing up is good. I resolve to be content with that.

Today I’m going to show up and visit a friend with real problems.

I am grateful. I will not take anything for granted.

Goldfield Ghost Town and Superstition Mountains

November 7, 2012 by Barb 14 Comments

arizona
Our first stop before we headed off into the wilderness of the Apache Trail was Goldfield Ghost Town. The engineer of our little tour train tipped us off that this was THE Kodak moment. I have to admit, I didn’t see it coming. But there it was, the little town backed by the Superstition Mountains.

I spent over an hour editing this shot in Lightroom. I cropped it, adjusted the white balance, and applied several presets: sharpening, punch, and a vignette. It’s not perfect, I think the sky is blown out but I decided to leave that lesson for another day.

Here it is with the ‘Aged Photo’ preset applied. Kinda cool! I have a feeling I’m going to be acquiring several thousand Lightroom presets in the near future.

arizona

Confession: I made a slight edit in CS6

Driving the Apache Trail is a story in itself. It’s an incredible drive and I’m glad to be alive.

Life of Pi – have you read it?

October 31, 2012 by Barb 8 Comments

I read this book a few years ago and I’ve already blogged about it once. But bear with me folks – the movie is coming out on November 21st and I’m beyond excited.

I’m not sure how they are going to get this amazing book onto the big screen but I’ve seen the Trailer and I get serious goosebumps! Watch it and tell me you don’t.

I finally convinced hubby to read the book. When he was finished, he said what I was expecting: “I don’t get it”. We got into quite the lively discussion as I tried to explain to him why it hit me so BIG. Then I showed him what I had since learned about the book by reading several analyses wherein a livelier discussion followed – which in itself was great: lively discussions with hubby where I know what I’m talking about and definitely have an opinion.

Please don’t go and read about it – I urge you to read the book first.

I’m reading it again – and will be standing in line on November 21st.

Money grab? or heinous crime . . .

September 22, 2012 by Barb 6 Comments

It’s the first day of autumn! in case ya didn’t know! and it’s a glorious, sunny, warm, calm day here. I hope it’s equally as beautiful wherever you are!

I missed 5 Fact Friday (again)(ugh). Can’t seem to keep up!

Thought I’d play catch-up, so here is my “10 Facts (Saturday)”

  1. I took this photo after leaving the Provincial Courthouse where I paid my ticket.
  2. He asked “Are you here to save money?”
  3. I said “Yes.”
  4. He asked “Did you watch the video?”
  5. I said “Yes.”
  6. He asked “Did you stop?”
  7. I said “No.”
  8. He said “OK, I’ll reduce the fine – no demerits.”
  9. I said “Thank you very much, sir.”
  10. He said “You’re welcome.”

It bites. What I did was not so bad – truly – I am a careful driver. Even the clerk at the courthouse said this amounts to a money grab by the city.

Lesson learned. I won’t be doing that particular infraction ever again. What a bad girl am I.
Now that I’ve ranted I feel better. Thanks for listening!

5 Fact Friday and what I love

August 31, 2012 by Barb 20 Comments

texture, kim klassen
  1. I love wreaths and I make new wreaths for every season. This year I made a tansy wreath. We have tons of tansy growing in our ditches and even though it is classified as a noxious weed – I love it! It’s so bright and cheery and it dries quite nicely (and smells sweet too).
  2. I made another very different kind of wreath to put inside for my autumn decorating (soon to be revealed) (I love it).
  3. I love autumn. OK, I said it. As soon as September 1st rolls around, I roll out the carpet for fall. It feels like a new beginning to me – even more than a new year.
  4. I love to get up early – excited to start a new, creative day.
  5. Oh, and I love decorative birdhouses – I’m amassing quite a collection . . . I saw a red one the other day at the Country Pumpkin and I wanted it but I didn’t get it. I’m trying not to buy things impulsively. I’ve become a slave to the “if you don’t get it now – it’ might not be there later”. Well, this may be true but I’m experimenting to see if my world falls apart if I don’t get something. I am going to go back next week and look at it. If it’s still there and it’s still calling my name- I may get it.
We are heading into our September long weekend. Looks like the weather is going to be quite nice. We have some work that needs to be done around the yard, but I’m guessing that we are going to be spending some time out on the lake too. I’m also hoping to make some loaves from the zucchini we got last weekend at the U-Pick. That’s another thing I love – fall baking.
Have a happy, happy weekend everyone!
I’m linking up to 5 Fact Friday over at Reflection of You. Why don’t you join us?

5 Fact Friday and getting organized with Walmart and Martha Stewart

August 24, 2012 by Barb 21 Comments

Even though I am (ahem) . . . a bit older, and school days are waaaaayyy behind me, I still get the bug this time of year to go and buy school supplies. It’s just so much darn fun!

Luckily I have my Blog and My Creative Team duties that I need to keep track of. I have tried all different kinds of organizing tools and have spent a small fortune in supplies that I am just not going to use. I’ve also found that keeping track of things in a spreadsheet or calendar on the computer just does not cut it for me.

So yesterday I found myself at Walmart in the school supplies section poring over different notebooks, calendars, and pens. And then I went to Staples and drooled over Martha Stewart Office . . .

To note:

  1. The best calendar for me is the cheapest planner by Mead. It has a full month view plus a day-by-day view. It’s lightweight, not too big and fits in my computer bag and goes with me everywhere. Now is the time to buy it – you won’t find it later in the year . . .
  2. A 5 subject notebook by Hilroy works perfectly for notes – it too is lightweight and fits in my computer bag.
  3. The most expensive items were the Avery colour-coding dots . . . you can’t buy a pack with 5 colours – oh no – you have to buy separate packs for each colour – grrrrrr . . .
  4. The Martha Stewart dividers and post-it notes are too much fun!
  5. I do all this organizing because I have my blog to run. I also have 100 blog posts to write for Digital Scrapper (over and above the 4 posts I already do each month). I have 2 tutorials a month with strict deadlines and I am considering adding 2 more scrapbook page assignments per month to the 8 I am already committed to.
  6. I have so many classes on the go that I can hardly keep track of them, let alone do them . . .
I know – I have 6 facts here today but, hey, I’m on a roll . . .
How about you? are you busy? are you loving it or feeling overwhelmed? I’m both . . .

Routines – do you have one?

August 9, 2012 by Barb 10 Comments

At Shutter Sisters today the prompt is ‘routines’. That’s an easy one for me. I am one big routine. I get up around 5:30 – 6:00 and head straight to my coffee pot, turn it on, then head straight for the computer.

I check e-mail, my blog, other blogs, and Digital Scrapper. If all looks well I will either write a blog post or try to create a scrapbook page or a tutorial. I’m on fire until 10:30 and that’s when I decide I had better get up and get some errands finished.

coffee and computer first thing . . .

Somewhere in that early morning time frame, I’ll make the bed (365/days/year).

I love my cool, uncluttered, green and serene bedroom. I’m always thinking I should hang some pictures but I never get around to it . . . perhaps there is a good reason.

And I always eat a pretty good breakfast. Hubby eats early (a bowl of cereal) and leaves for work while I’m still having coffee. So even though I am alone I still take the time to make porridge, or even oatmeal pancakes. We always have eggs on the weekend so I never cook an egg (unless it’s hidden in some French Toast). I also take a glucosamine for my arthritic thumb and knees . . . I think it helps.

I also have other routines such as:

1. I always park in the the same area in a parking lot when I’m shopping – plus I ‘eyeball’ it so that I know how to find my car. Have you ever lost your car? total embarrassment.

2. I only eat bananas in the morning.

3. I floss my teeth at night – every night, and I also remove makeup and wash my face – without fail. Too much information? My mother used to say to us before bed ‘have you done your health rules?‘ and I guess it stuck with me for life.

4. I go to bed at 10:00 every.single.night. (almost)

5. I never watch the news until the evening (with hubby) which is at 5:30. I don’t want to see all the disasters more than once.

I’m also playing with my daughter this morning at “A Pretty Life in the Suburbs”. Her post today is ‘Random Shtuffff’ and she suggested we link up in her comments – so I’m taking the opportunity to link to one of the best blogs in town!

Fact #1
I am spoiled rotten. Hubby has a Kobo and I mentioned I sure would like one too (maybe for Christmas). Well, yesterday he brought one home for me – just because – awwww!

Now I have to go and return the ‘Fifty Shades’ paperback series that I just bought . . . (he he . . . I may be old, but I’m not dead). OK that’s Fact #2 and Fact #3.

Fact #4
To reiterate, I am spoiled rotten. (Plus I like to use big words). I just upgraded from Photoshop CS5 to CS6.

Fact #5
See Fact #4. I just bought Lightroom too . . .

My Favourite Space – One Word Project Day 2

August 2, 2012 by Barb 13 Comments

This is my space. A fav space. I sit here, I read here, I think here, and I sleep here.

taken with my hipstamatic for the One Word Project

The sun shines in the big old windows and it’s always warm but I do have a cozy knit blanket close at hand. Sometimes I read novels, other times a magazine, and other times my loved, tattered and coffee-stained book ‘Simple Abundance‘.

This spot is the epitome of simple abundance and I say thank you for it every day. A small bouquet from the garden sits on an old banged up antique coffee table I found a few weeks ago. I was going to refinish the table but after seeing it in my room for a while I realize it is the perfect match just the way it is so I don’t plan to do anything with it.

My favourite room: clean and orderly – no chaos allowed here. This morning I was just (re)reading the entry for May 10 where Sarah Ban Breathnach wrote about Ann Landers’ list of rules:

1. If you open it, close it.
2. If you turn it on, turn it off.
3. If you unlock it, lock it up.
4. If you break it, admit it.
5. If you can’t fix it, call in someone who can.
6. If you borrow it, return it.
7. If you value it, take care of it.
8. If you make a mess, clean it up.
9. If you move it, put it back.
10. If it belongs to someone else, get permission to use it.
11. If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone.
12. If it’s none of your business, don’t ask questions.

It’s an oldy but a goldy.

One Word Project – August

Well, now that I have my iPod I’ve been taking a few photos here and there. But I have to admit – I find it a bit difficult. I did get one that I really liked, but most of them? not so much . . . plus I didn’t really know what to do with them.

So today I am joining in with the Shutter Sisters for their One Word Project. There are a list of prompts for each day and the idea is to “elevate the everyday”. So for the month of August I plan to take a photo a day. I’m not going to sweat over getting the perfect shots – for me it’s about doing and learning and in the end I will have captured a bit of my life and what’s not to like about that?

Hanging out with Kim Klassen

The prompt today is “my morning”.

This was my morning, however it is not quite ‘the everyday’. Jessica Maleski invited me and seven others to join in a Google Hangout with Kim Klassen as our guest! So this is my morning and of course that’s Kim there . . . I’m over in the first square holding up my iPod to snap this photo. There certainly were a few hiccups during the recording but hey – it was still an amazing experience! and a big thank you to Jessica for a job well done! She was holding her baby the whole time she was hosting this hangout! I thought it was showing in real time – but now I’m not too sure – I think Jessica is going to edit it and then post it.

So back to Instagram, to share my photos I’ve joined ‘Followgram’ and you can keep an eye on me there if you have the urge – (I’m not going to blog about all of them). To follow just click on the Instagram icon at the top of my blog and it will take you to my photo stream.

OK – I’m off to clean up my house – it looks like a tornado went through it! I’ve been sitting at the computer for much to long . . .

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Shutter speeds and boats . . .

July 27, 2012 by Barb 15 Comments

Our lakeside community has a summer picnic every year. It starts out with supper – hot dogs, hamburgers, beans and cold salads. Ice cream and cookies soon follow.

All the kids run around like crazy – chasing each other, or swimming or sliding on the slip-n-slide – they simply have a blast!

The adults have a few drinks and lots of conversations. It’s a great way to catch up on what everyone has been up to.

The evening ends with a spectacular – and I mean spectacular ($10,000.00) fireworks display. Yes, you read that right! Some watch from shore but most people cruise out quietly on the lake and sit and watch from their boats. It’s quite the experience.

I had planned to set up my tripod on shore and shoot some great prize-winning photos . . . but the pull of the beautiful, calm, and glassy lake overrode my desire . . . and this is what you get whilst sitting on a boat that is gently rocking . . . hmmmm, maybe I can call it ‘art’?

I love how the lake shows up in this one:

Truth be told, I had my shutter speed too slow as well . . .

Oh well, maybe next year?

Instagram for reals

July 12, 2012 by Barb 15 Comments

I now have an iPodtouch to fuel my internet addiction. I just couldn’t justify buying an iPhone and when my daughter and son-in-law said all I really needed was an iPod – well, I gave hubby the marching orders and within days I had one in my hot little hands!

I’ve been fumbling around on it ever since – oh the frustration! I feel like a dimwit it takes so long for me to ‘get something’!

Obviously, I’m getting somewhere or I wouldn’t have this stunning sunset photo that I took while cruising around the lake last night.

I won’t say I’ve got it figured out completely, but I’m well on my way. Now I don’t have to fake it :)

Oh, and thank you to Kim Klassen and Xanthe Berkeley for their inspiring lessons!
