April 18, 2014 by Barb 27 Comments

If not for the evidence found in this little fellas coat, I would say that winter is not going away this year.

Geese

It’s been a cold, snowy, gray/brown week. But also a happy, productive week.

I finished up a tutorial, went for lunch with the ladies and visited a greenhouse!! where I bought some sweet little succulents. I felt overwhelmed with happiness and anticipation of the new gardening season that is sure to come, right?

As this is the Easter week-end, hubby and I will be spending some time with our family (so excited).

I hope you have a wonderful and happy Easter!

Friday Finds

September 6, 2013 by Barb 14 Comments

Here are just a few of the extraordinary things that I found this week…

A nasturtium and a marigold that I dug out of the garden about a month ago and put into a pot on the deck are rewarding me with a profusion of new growth.

Crispy and colourful leaves on the driveway leave no doubt as to what is on it’s way.

friday finds

Morning sunlight streaming through the trees and onto the dewy grass.

friday finds

Some beautiful light shining into a farmyard.

This slippery salamander was on the road as I walked to meet my friends. It seemed to be frozen, so I had to push it along to the ditch so that it wouldn’t get run over. In the ten years that I’ve lived here I’ve never seen one until now.

It was a beautiful week.

Look who graced our yard this weekend!
One of the larger members of its family, the Pine Grosbeak is a bird of the boreal forests, found across northern Eurasia and North America, and south into the mountains of western Canada and the United States. A large, unwary finch, it makes periodic winter irruptions into southern Canada and northern United States. It is the largest and rarest of the “winter finches.”

A prickly situation . . .

June 16, 2011 by Barb 8 Comments

Last night just as I was heading to bed I was astonished to see this fella coming out of the trees and into our yard! OK, what is THAT? oh, it’s a porcupine!

Run to get my camera (battery has one bar left) and my card is in the computer. Run to the computer, get the card, insert in camera, set up tripod . . . start shooting!

I couldn’t believe my eyes when he started to climb up the bird feeder, and with ease, albeit a tight squeeze once he got there. He didn’t get much to eat so he left quite soon, vanishing into my flower bed. After he was a long way off I went out on the deck and tried to take some photos without the window between us. He heard the camera clicking and sat right up and faced me. It was a bit spooky and I had bad dreams last night.

I’m going to be a lot more careful when I go wandering through the yard from now on. Note that these photos were taken with the ISO cranked all the way up to 1600 so they are quite grainy – it was almost dark when I took these.

You can check out Hinterland Who’s Who for some interesting facts.

Starling Aerobatics

March 21, 2011 by Barb 6 Comments

The other evening we were driving down a side road when we came across these starlings getting ready to settle for the night. It was a totally unexpected performance and was it ever amazing! We’d never seen it before so of course we stopped and I proceeded to take twenty five photos! I found this video on YouTube if you want to check it out – very interesting!
