It’s winter in my part of the world, which means central heating… which means dry, dry, dry… super dry…
Yes, we do have a humidifier and it does help (a lot) but I need to moisturize daily and for that I use Aveeno products. However, I’ve found that two moisturizers are better than one – especially when that moisturizer is coconut oil. It goes on a bit oily at first, but after a few minutes the oiliness vanishes and it leaves my arms and legs feeling silky soft. Believe it or not, I even put a bit of it in my hair.
I have a gigantic jar of it (from Costco) and every day I was going to the pantry, scooping out a little bit with a spoon and heading back to the bathroom. I finally got the bright idea to put a little bit in a container to keep handy by the bathtub (duh).
I found a tin that used to hold some scrapbooking supplies, peeled off the top sticker, gave the tin a good washing with soap and water, then glued a piece of new, pretty paper to the lid.
Because the oil is in a semi-hardened state, I gently heated some and then poured it into the tin and let it re-set (I like things to look pretty).
Pretty, simple, and effective. It may even make a nice little gift!
have never used it for anything. bet it smells good, too.

Great article, Gloria!
And because I love coconut so much, sometimes I use it on toast, instead of butter. It is delicious
I have done the same thing…have little pots of it all around the house and always take it with me when I travel! have to be careful in the summer though, it liquefies at 72 degrees I think, and you don’t want that all over your suitcase. When I’ve been working hard out in the yard and my fingers are dried out and hurting, the coconut oil is so soothing….even on rashes and cuts, it feels so good.
It is very soothing, Mary Beth, but I will be sure to not pack it in a suitcase!
Hmmm. I used beeswax for a long time {remember I live south of the Mason-Dixon line!} but never coconut oil. Very intriguing. I’m actually more fascinated by your little tin. I do hope you have a grand new year and a blessed-with-abundance 2014. So glad you have met up with you this year!
We use it. In cooking too. We’ve just started mixing some essential oils in like lavender for skin or lemon.
Great idea, Barb! I actually have a ton of those little tins around and a lot of them are currently in use holding embellishments for my December Daily album. Now I want to clean them out and go get some coconut oil! Granted, it’s not as cold here and we don’t get dried out from central heating but it is very dry out and my skin tends to get scaly in the winter so this sounds like the perfect solution! And after all the paper handling of the past month (crafting, wrapping, etc.) my hands could use some help as well. I think I may be heading off to Costco today!
Sounds good, Barb, and indeed a nice gift in that lovely tin !
Wishing you and your family a great New Year’s Eve
and best wishes for 2014 !
Sylvia
Great idea I have never used coconut oil barb but I use dry oil from the Body Shop it’s gorgeous and I use it in my hair too. Have Happy New Year…x
I really like this idea . I have one to share. Sweet Almond Oil. in a bath or just on your skin. Buy it at a Health Food Store. I love it and even take it to Hawaii for after being out in the elements all day.. Even though I never lay and tan its still hard on the skin. I use in my jacuzzi also.
That sounds divine Lisa – I’m going to have to get some of that! thank you!
