Potting Bench Quandary

May 3, 2017 by Barb 1 Comment

If you’re ever going to be in a quandary, hopefully it’s as simple and light as trying to decide where to set up your potting bench!

This week I’m rearranging my deck; moving my potting bench here and there, trying to decide if the furniture we have is working for me (it’s not) and setting up pots and crates ready to be filled with herbs and flowers.

And while I’m enjoying being outside immensely … I’m a bit frustrated at my deck situation. It’s a partly covered deck (which is wonderful) and I want to take advantage of the space where I can work even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Here the potting bench catches sunlight which is lovely for the plants, plus it’s still under the overhang so it’s out of the elements. But it’s a bit inconvenient as it sits against the railings and partially blocks the view of the surrounding forest:Potting Bench, Barb Brookbank, Keeping With the TimesHere the potting bench is against the house which results in flatter light, and no sun:Potting Bench, Barb Brookbank, Keeping With the TimesSo what would you do? I really don’t want to set it against the railings but I feel it’s too drab against the wall.

Wait! I might have another solution … I have two potting benches ;)

The other one sits on the ground and is exposed to the weather. I wrote about it in my An Inspired Barnwood Potting Bench post a few years back.

I guess I would simply have to time my work, and my photography around Mother Nature.

I think I just solved my own problem ;)

Entertaining on the deck in autumn

September 20, 2012 by Barb 26 Comments

We are having the most beautiful September. Warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. It’s very bittersweet – I love autumn but it’s simply so fleeting.

We live on a small lake and it’s this time of year all the permanent residents come out of the woodwork. Most people are back at work, boats and docks pulled in for the winter. But not us.

This Saturday we are planning a little neighborhood get-together. Appetizers and drinks followed by a tour of the lake on an early September evening.

I wanted to pretty up the deck a bit beforehand, so I put a tablecloth on the patio furniture bench and put a bit of burlap over top. I topped that with an old mirror (old and chippy) and put candles all around.

Aren’t my Belgian Mums gorgeous!? After our summer pots were shredded by hail – these were a welcome replacement. Hubby brought them home one night (from Costco).

I’ve been busy this summer hauling home any kind of old wood “thing” I can get my hands on. When I saw this bench at our local country store I could not run to the counter and hand over my money fast enough! It’s a handmade bench made from old wood – beautiful, heavy, old wood. There are moss and lichens growing all over it. It’s so sturdy – it was such a great find!

Now, what to serve? I think it’s going to be Brie topped with Vidalia Onion and Maple Conserve (recipe to follow soon).

Happy September Everyone!
Happy Autumn!
