A waxwing is a waxwing is a waxwing?

November 7, 2011 by Barb 47 Comments

These beautiful birds have been visiting our yard for the past several days. At first you hear their beautiful twittering song and if you look up high you will see them sitting in the tops of the trees. Suddenly, they will swoop down together and start eating the berries which had attracted them from afar. I’m not going to say they are Cedar Waxwings or Bohemian Waxwings because for the life of me I cannot tell the difference. Perhaps some of my bird-loving friends will be able to help me out.

So, my friends, what say you?

. . . do these feathers make me look fat?
. . . down the hatch . . .
. . . say, do you get the feeling we are being watched?

I have such wonderful memories of cedar waxwings. I think they must have visited our yard when my family lived in town (before I turned 9)…after we moved to the farm, we might see them in our mountain ash tree once a year. I’ve kept one ugly juniper shrub in our present backyard, because the waxwings used to come each year. I haven’t seen any for a long time, now. I love the sound they make. Your photos are absolutely terrific! You’ve captured their color..and their “character” so well!

The Bohemian Waxwing has rusty (not white) under tail coverts. I believe, therefore, they are Bohemian, not Cedar Waxwings.
Such a nice series of photographs too.

Gorgeous shots! I love these birds so much – they sound and look so beautiful! I’m going to say these are Bohemian Waxwings because the colour under their tails is rust coloured, not white like the Cedar Waxwings. This is very lucky because the Bohemian Waxwings just pass through our area!

Bohemian Waxwings!! Check the wing colours the Cedars are less flamboyant. You’re lucky to have them; once the berries are gone they’re gone. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

Oh there beautiful. I use to get Cedar Waxwings on our ornamental pear tree. But now the pear tree is gone and so are those lovely birds.
I just might have to plant another ornamental pear tree.
