While searching for a quote I ran across this poem by Veronica Shoffstall, and, like many others, I found that it “spoke” to me. Perhaps it speaks to you as well.
After a While
After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today,
Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans,
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure…
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn…
With every goodbye you learn.

I hadn’t read this poem before Barb. It’s fabulous. I’m so glad you shared it.
Hi Celine! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! It’s one of my favourites!
Sorry for the negative comment here, but truth these days seems to be malleable. This woman, Shoffstall, did not write this point. Completely stolen from Jorge Luis Borges, who died in 1986. This was written in Spanish originally, but I can assure you it is nearly word-for-word his poem.
PS I am a gardener and wholly enjoy the sentiment of the poem (and of this site). Don’t shoot the messenger :)
I came across this poem in my late teens. While rereading the poem over and over, I put it to memory for sometime. Today 20 years plus later, I came across it again, and read it out loud. The words reminded me of my past journeys. And, today, I’m reminded of it again.
