Marsh Marigolds

June 3, 2014 by Barb 18 Comments

Marsh Marigolds [caltha palustris] are one of the first (if not the first) wildflower that pops up around here. Every spring these wonderful flowers light up dark boggy areas with their bright buttercup-like flowers and are a welcome sight to us winter-weary Albertans!

I braved a swamp and an army of mosquitoes to get these photos (and a small handful of marigolds).Marsh Marigolds, Keeping With the Timesmarsh marigolds, Keeping With the Timesmarsh marigolds, Keeping With the Times

Caltha palustris is more commonly called marsh marigold or kingcup. It’s rather toxic and requires careful handling as it can cause blistering. I used rubber gloves to pick and arrange these little beauties.marsh marigolds, Keeping With the Timesmarsh marigolds, Keeping With the TimesTruly a welcome sight in these here parts! Thank you for stopping by!

Pretty we have loads in our garden as we have clay soil which can get quite boggy when we have rain…

    So pretty, Barb.
I was just out braving the “swamps” this morning, photographing these. :-)
    Luckily no mosquitoes though!

What great photos. I see those growing in the wild, and when on the way to the Lake, I always want the hubby to stop so I can photograph or borrow just a few…but he is in such a hurry that he doesn’t stop. I plan to drive separate one of these Spring days so I can laze along the way and take photos. hahaha Love that you say to braved the swamp and hope you didn’t suffer too many mosquito bites. Thanks so much for sharing their loveliness :)

Such sweet little blooms, I don’t think I have ever seen them, they do look a lot like marigolds.

Barb, I don’t recall seeing these beautiful flowers in our local wetlands, but I’ll be sure to look for them now. You did a beautiful job showcasing these flowers, both in their natural environment and as still life vignettes. Love the simple white background with the flowers so perfectly arranged and focused.

Wow! Those marsh marigolds are beautiful! So delicate yet such a happy color. It was well worth risking life and limb! :-D

What a delicate but oh-so lovely flower! Sorry about the “bugs” you braved but it looks like it was worth it and especially since you found some marigolds too!

What an intense yellow! They are gorgeous flowers…..I love the way you’ve presented them differently in each photo.
Hope you didn’t get bitten though …… I hate mozzies :-(
