A Trio of Visual Triangles

April 1, 2014 by Barb 18 Comments

Texture Tuesday

I have this thing about collecting little jars and filling them with dried bits and pieces. Here we have some birch branches, a sprig of yarrow, and some poppy seed heads. I considered this arrangement for quite some time and decided what I like about it is the orderliness of it all.

The image is made up of three visual triangles:

  • The jars themselves; shorter to taller then back down to shorter. The little small one in the middle draws the eye across the bottom.
  • The three dried sprigs.
  • The colours; dark gold yarrow at the top, a brown and beige label on the left, and the dark bottle on the right.

Yes, I am a little bit obsessed with triangles. I believe it goes back to my days at “Get It Scrapped” where Debbie Hodge devotes several classes to just this concept. Then she teaches a class about how to throw out the whole idea of visual triangles … wait a minute … hmmmm … anyway I now look for visual triangles everywhere I go. I think I love them. You can see it at work on some of my decorating when I created “My Quirky Autumn Mantel“.

Couple things to note today. If you are an Instagrammer, there is a fun little challenge going on called #prettywaterlogueapril hosted by @prettyhandygirl. Check it out on my feed “keepingupblog“, it’s nothing but fun!

Focusing on Life  has a new theme for April, which is “Earth Day”, lots of fun there too! You can participate on Instagram, your blog, or flickr – check it out!

And don’t forget to check out all the beauties over at Kim Klassen dot com for Texture Tuesday. I used Kim’s kk_1808 for my image today.

Thanks for stopping by!

This is so delightful, and pretty Barb! I love the clarity of the glass bottles, even the brown ones …maybe it is the glass. Such a beautiful still, with lovely light!

Gorgeous image! The composition is perfect and so are the colors. I also love the different textures – the smooth glass, the matte paper labels, the rough rusty cap, and the weave the fabrics on the table and in the back. Beautiful!

    Not only do I love your visual triangles, I love the whole concept! I’ve made a note in my journal to keep it in mind. Hope you’re enjoying your sojourn in the desert! {And thanks for the FOL plug!}

Oh Barb, all your vintage jars are so lovely and I know exactly what you’re talking about when you mention Debbie’s classes. I took those too and often times find myself looking for that triangle in my layouts. Now you’ll have me looking in my photos too! LOL
Thanks so much for mentioning my site!

Wonderful triangles. Great collection of bottles with “weeds.” I have some of them too. Great composition with the use of size and color.

Love! I have bunches of dead stuff in bottles too. I try to keep some ‘arranged’ but a lot are just occupying space. Thanks for the
Waterlogue reminder. Although it’s 30 minutes into April 2nd as I write this. But wait, it’s still the 1st where you are!

Great how this composition works, the small one in front is the eye catcher and makes me walk through the picture !

Your bottles and ideas have made very nice still life, Barb.
The other day I was reading about importance of the triangle concept in photography and I found it very interesting. We often like things and don’t know why until someone more observant explains it. :)

Beautiful composition and photo! I love jars and bottles as well- although we cleared out quite a few when we moved. Now looking at this still life, I see it is time to restock! Funny- I was just having a discussion with a photo friend about posing groups of PEOPLE- and the same triangle concept came up. I had never thought about it for still lifes- great idea!
