How to Double Pageviews in 30 Days

November 30, 2016 by Barb 19 Comments

With 2 years of experience participating in National Blog Post Month, I believe I have enough experience/evidence to give advice on how to double pageviews in 30 days.

I’m a huge believer in blogs and blogging and bloggers.

People are blogging for many reasons. For some it’s simply a creative outlet, for others it’s a business, and sometimes the two collide. But whatever the reason a person is blogging, I think they really do want to be heard. I know I do.

In the past I used to judge my readership by the number of comments I received. Well, that seems to be the past … not many people are commenting and I wrote about that in my post Blog Comment Pressures which ironically got a lot of comments!

I still enjoy blogging and my blog is my baby. Last February I confessed to a failed attempt at keeping up my blogging schedule in Have You Hugged Your Blog Today?

My main message in that post was that it’s OK to fail. Just get up, hug yourself, and keep on keepin’ on.

So what is the secret on how to double pageviews in 30 days?

How To Double Pageviews in 30 Days, Barb Brookbank, Keeping With the Times

It’s kind of simple … Post every day. Simple, but not easy. And the effect only lasts as long as you keep on posting.

Both Novembers where I posted every single day, my pageviews doubled. How do I know that? Google Analytics. I have solid evidence that when I posted every day my pageviews doubled over the month before, as well as the previous Novembers (when I didn’t post every day as in 2014 and earlier.) I even had the hubs corroborate the evidence.

Was it easy? NO. Some days it was painful.

But has it been satisfying? Tremendously so. Perhaps I can only say that now that I’ve reached my goal of posting every single day in November for #NaBloPoMo. Some days were downright awful, but when I look back I can see that I shared some pretty kick-a** posts (yes this Grandmother of 5 swears ;)

I wrote posts that I most likely would not have shared otherwise, and will probably bring in traffic for years to come … how do I know that? Past experience and Google Analytics.

So there you have it. The secret on how to double your pageviews in 30 days is to post every day for 30 days.

OK. So I posted every day for 30 days … what else did I do? There is always more to the story, right? I’ll share that in an upcoming post. But let me just say, that for the most part it was about posting every.single.day.

Thank you to anyone who followed me on this journey; leaving comments and clicking “like”. I appreciate you more than you could know.

xo

Day 30 of Posting Every Day in November! High Fives all around.

A Few of My Favourite Things

November 29, 2016 by Barb Leave a Comment

Everyone seems to be compiling lists of “holiday must haves” and “favourite things”… ’tis the season after all isn’t it?

I’m always very interested to see what other people love. Word of mouth is a very powerful force … if someone I trust recommends something, I sit up and listen.

So, with an open heart and honest opinion, here are a few of my favourite things!

Favourite Things, Keeping With the Times, Barb Brookbank

1. Bare Minerals Makeup

I have extremely sensitive skin, and there are very few products I’m able to use (especially on my face and near my eyes.) But I have no problem applying Bare Minerals makeup first thing in the morning, and not removing it until evening. As a result I’m more apt to wear makeup when I go out, and that just makes me feel good. Oh, and did I mention I have to remove it in the evening? It’s one makeup that doesn’t wear off before noon—amazing!

2. Teavana Tea

I discovered Teavana Tea last Christmas when the store was handing out samples. Now I don’t think I could get through December without it! My absolute favourite is Spiced Apple Cider … oh my gosh, it’s a rich, soothing rooibos tea with a sweetness that’s almost sinful.

3. Pentatonix Christmas

OK, like everyone else on the planet I’m in love with Pentatonix and I finally purchased two of their Christmas albums. If you haven’t seen the video, take a peek here (goosebumps!)

4. Vitamix Professional Series 200

Last summer our youngest daughter and her family gave us a Vitamix. Oh.my.gosh. Vitamix where have you been all my life?! No fruit or vegetable is safe in this house.

Store bought spaghetti sauce is a thing of the past. I now roast fresh (or frozen) tomatoes, garlic, and onions, with a bit of olive oil and with a quick whir in the Vitamix you end up with one incredibly flavourful sauce. I once made an entire (cooked) Costco-size Italian sausage disappear into it … no one had any idea it was there, but what flavour it added! :)

5. The Rayna Puffer Coat by Andrew Marc

This puffy coat is “da bomb”. It’s a packable down coat … perfect for tucking into a suitcase before heading to Arizona in January (because, well you know, we eventually have to return home and it’s usually late at night, into a snowstorm, with frigid temperatures and icy winds.) I’m usually tempted to wear it to bed that first night like a sleeping bag … brrrr … .

6. Rough Linen Adult Pinafore

These pinafores were a huge hit at both “Finding Stillness 2015 and 2016” retreats with Kim Klassen.

Anyone and everyone who lays eyes on one just can’t seem to get it out of their mind. These aprons are comfy, easy to clean, soft, natural and have huge pockets. I’m currently living in mine.

7. Bella Grace Magazine

Ah, Bella Grace Magazine. How do I love thee?

I became aware of this publication when Issue 2 hit the stands … I was in Barnes and Noble, and as I flipped through the pages, I slowly moved toward the nearest bench and sat down. My heart was pounding a bit … and when that happens to me, I pay attention.

The photos were so real … perfectly imperfect, and beautiful, and intriguing. The magazine itself felt like a coffee table book with beautiful, thick paper (I believe I thumbed along the edges and smelled it, and maybe even said “oh wow” out loud.)

As I skimmed a few articles, I realized I was reading pull-quotes and storylines that were highlighted or printed in different fonts and sizes … it was pure magic. I knew I wasn’t going to be leaving this treasure behind, and as I tucked it under my arm and made my way to the cashier, I know I was smiling.

8. Sweet Paul Magazine

Sweet Paul Magazine also has my heart. I love the messy food images and imperfect crafts. Just love. I usually watch for it to go on sale at the end of a season (at Anthropologie.) It doesn’t matter to me what season it is, I love it all.

9. Flow Magazine

And Flow magazine, artsy, trendy, unusual. I can’t remember how I first discovered it but I think it was on Instagram. I’d seen people using it in their images and was so intrigued. I buy every issue I can get my hands on.

I recently tried to purchase the latest issue at Barnes and Noble when I was in the US, but the lady who I asked said “no … we’re sold out … that magazine is freakishly popular” … not sure what she meant by that. But anyway, I think I’m going to subscribe to it.

So there you have a few of my favourite things. Hope you’ve enjoyed it and found it helpful (and oh yes, this is not a sponsored post :) wish it was ;)

You might want to check out my daughter’s list A Women’s Holiday Gift Guide. Jo’s one to watch as she’s always on top of things!

Tulips in November

9 Tips For Navigating Craft Sales Like a Boss

November 26, 2016 by Barb 11 Comments

Who does not love to attend local craft sales, especially this time of year? I know I certainly do! And this year I decided to approach these craft sales in a totally different way. I wasn’t simply looking for treasures (although that was at the top of my list ;) I was looking for inspiration, I wanted to immerse myself in other peoples creativity, I wanted it to rub off on me.

At the top of my list of craft sales to attend this year was the Indie Handmade in St. Albert.

Because the sale wasn’t too busy when I arrived, I took the time to talk to the artisans. I simply asked a few questions about their product and they took it from there. Little did they know I wanted to hear not so much about the product, but how they felt about it. They couldn’t know I was soaking up their enthusiasm and joy … their passion.

I was soaking up some of their passion (sounds almost evil doesn’t it … but I assure you I am not evil ;)

Here are a few tips for navigating craft sales like a boss so that you can find what you want … whether it be treasures, or inspiration!

9 Tips for Navigating Craft Sales Like a Boss

  1. Do a little research ahead of time: check out parking, admission, and hours of operation.
  2. Go alone or with like-minded friends, people who don’t mind if you disappear and do your own thing. Keep in touch via texts as in “let’s go for coffee or a bite to eat.”
  3. Attend opening day since it will likely get busier as the weekend progresses. I’m retired so I have that choice.
  4. Arrive early.
  5. Wear a light coat, comfortable footwear, and perhaps a scarf to keep neck and shoulders warm.
  6. Carry a purse that isn’t too large or bulky. Consider using a backpack.
  7. If the show isn’t too large, plan to walk around at least twice. If its really huge, make small purchases as you go, or make note of the booth and go back later. Many vendors will gladly hold your purchases until you are ready to pick them up.
  8. Scan booths and stop only at the ones that most interest you. You literally don’t have all day … exhaustion will set in sooner rather than later.
  9. Use cash as much as possible to help the vendor reduce their costs.

I almost passed by this young woman’s booth, thinking I was much too old for anything she was selling. But her sweet face and obvious talent drew me in … she reminded me of Kelly Rae Roberts and her “Wear Your Joy” series.

Tips for Navigating Craft Sales, Keeping With the Times

Meet Leonie of Maple and Oak Designs

So here are three vendors that inspired me enough to make a purchase:

Maple and Oak Designs
Funky fashion accessories.
Handmade from vintage, reclaimed and retro fabrics in Calgary, Canada.
Definitely unique and mostly one of a kind.

Yes, I bought a triangle scarf from Leonie; a young woman whose style is at least 40 years younger than mine! You just never know! Truly, keep your mind open people!

****

The Collective Scribble
Create books that others are excited and proud to art journal, scribble, write, hope and dream in.

I not only purchased a journal from The Collective Scribble, I’m taking a book binding class from them in January.

*****

Shadowpots
Ruby is an Edmonton based Potter who is passionate about carbon-trapped Shino glazes, pushing the boundaries of firing in a gas kiln. Shino is one of the oldest glazes and demands diligence and patience to perfect.

Ruby’s pottery was exactly what I was looking for: unique, one-of-a-kind pieces made with love.

Next weekend: The Butterdome!

Keeping the Home Fires Burning … Barely

November 23, 2016 by Barb 2 Comments

It was another foggy grey day around here, so I’m sharing one last image of my teeny tiny succulents (from Arizona) and then I promise to move on!
succulent-tea-lights-3079

I have to admit I’m barely hanging on here for #NaBloPoMo. It’s not that I’m not working on projects … that’s the problem … I’m working on projects, and the day is over in a blink. Then at 8:00 pm I realize I need to get a post up, but I’m done … so done, and well here I am with nothing to say for myself :(

Tomorrow I’m heading to the Indie Handmade Fall Craft Show at the Enjoy Centre (a greenhouse) woot! what better way to get on with the season!

Maybe I’ll even have something to report when I get home … let’s hope so!

Showing Up

November 18, 2016 by Barb 6 Comments

Eighty percent of success is showing up.
Woody Allen

Oh hey! it’s November 18th and I’ve managed to show up on my blog every day this month (as per my #NaBloPoMo promise to myself.)

Showing Up, Keeping With the TimesSome posts have been rather large and took a long time to create as in my Holiday Tablescape Ideas. Others were mediocre, and others were … meh. But I showed up and I have to admit it feels pretty good.

I almost always show up on Instagram, usually on Twitter, and sometimes on Facebook. And even though my blog often takes a back seat, it’s still my baby.

I had to giggle when I googled for this quote this morning … I’m loving the updated proverb :)

Showing Up, Woody Allen, Keeping With the Times

However I hope Google doesn’t know that for the most part I’ve thrown SEO to the wind … otherwise I would never get a post written. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do! EDIT: I think I know Google doesn’t know ;)

And many thanks to my friends Kim Klassen and Aeleen Sclater for including my photo in their #fouriadorefriday grid today!

Now I must get going … the hubs and I both are suffering from food poisoning, we have a condo to close up, and we have a plane to catch tonight … blech.

See you on the other side!

Happy Little Happenings

November 10, 2016 by Barb 1 Comment

At the center of your being
you have the answer;
you know who you are
and you know what you want.
Lao Tzu

I’ve been watching some video connects, taking a few classes, and thinking about what I do: how I spend my time, my energy, and my money.

I’ve come to realize I’m not the same person I was 6 years ago when I started this on-line journey … my dreams and my goals have changed.

When I wrote down what it was I hoped to accomplish from all the work I put into my photography, my blog, and Instagram, little things started happening … happy little things.

I’ve begun to see ways to make sense of it all, and how I could make some of my dreams come true. I’ve started to see what I want.

Mysterious, I know ;) and now, time to finish up the granola …

Tips For Working When Away From Home

November 7, 2016 by Barb 4 Comments

Today I have a few tips for working when you’re away from home.

Now some people may not call what I do “work” but that’s how I view it. More and more I find myself referring to what I do as work, as in “I have work to do”.

Just because I love it, and it’s my passion, and I’m not earning a living from it, does not make it any less important (to me.) Or any less work for that matter. I get up every day knowing I either have to style photos, take photos, edit photos, write blog posts, or all of the above.

And more and more I’m doing sponsored posts. Not huge sponsored posts, but important sponsored posts, and when I accept a collaboration from a company, I want to do my best.

Hard work pays off. I recently was paid for an image I took a few years ago … paid quite a bit actually, and to say I was dumbfounded would be an understatement.

My point is: show up, do the work, let it go, and you just never know what wonderful things may happen.
Tips For Working Away From Home, Keeping With the Times
I could not have known when I took the photo of the trees on the lake that morning, just how much it would match this one I took whilst in Arizona ;) too fun!

Tips For Working Away From Home, Keeping With the Times, Barb BrookbankWe travel a lot (it seems) and if I used that as an excuse I would have had to quit “my job” a long time ago. So how do I manage it?

Tips For Working When Away From Home

  1. Prepare as much as possible before you leave home. One weekend I went into overdrive, doing all my house and yard work. I made a list of everything I wanted to finish up before we left and methodically crossed off tasks as I finished them. But that’s not the best part. The best part is that it left the following Monday and Tuesday wide open for me to get a few still life images under my belt. Images that carried me through the first week we were away. It’s all I did from the moment I got up, until around 5:00pm when the light was fading, and so was I.
  2. I work strictly on a laptop. My lifestyle has dictated that. Edit photos while on the road. In airports, on planes. Know your camera, your editing programs, and how to work with Lightroom Mobile. You see? it’s work, it’s preparation. (ps … I have a large screen at home and one here in Arizona.)
  3. We have a condo here in Arizona so I’ve been able to collect a few props and backgrounds. Nothing too large, spectacular, or expensive. I’ve gathered props from local craft shows, thrift stores and garage sales. That makes it easy to give them away when I’m done with them. I simply donate them back.
  4. Make it a priority. If making and taking still life images is important to you, make sure your significant others know it and respect it. Set a time that you know works best for you, and claim that time. Make no apologies.
  5. OK. So set a time, but also set a time limit. I can’t be doing this all day. It would be unfair, and I don’t want to.
  6. When I travel by car, I often carry this wood photography background, it’s been a lifesaver. I actually have three! One stays at our home on the lake, one is my travelling background, and I have one here in Arizona!

Alrighty then, my time is up. We’re heading out for the day … the beautiful desert awaits.

Lightroom Love

November 5, 2016 by Barb 1 Comment

I’m pretty chuffed that I can now title a post “lightroom love” as in now I get it, I truly get it!

I’ve been OK with using Lightroom for quite some time, but the struggle was real, people! The struggle was real.

When I wrote My Struggles with Lightroom in 2012, I could not have been more confused, and I could not have disliked the organizational part of Lightroom more.

However, armed with some of Kim Klassen’s helpful and information-packed classes, I slowly got the hang of it (I can’t even tell you how many times I went over the free “Leap into Lightroom” class) but it was many, many … many times. And even recently when I realized my workflow had taken a wrong turn somewhere along the line, I revisited it.

So why do I feel the need to shout it from the rooftops today? Well, because this past October I started a new catalog and file system all.by.myself!

I’d been using the same catalog for two years, which isn’t a bad thing. It was pretty well-organized, but I felt the need to start fresh for 2017, so to make good and sure I was going to be using it in 2017, I started in October of 2016 (he he.)

You can see the name at the top of this screenshot “LIGHTROOM OCT 2016-DEC 2017 CATALOG.lrcat”.Lightroom Love, New Catalog, Barb Brookbank, Keeping With the Times

I’m not going to go into my file structure or workflow because I think that’s something a person has to figure out for themselves.

However, I will divulge one little secret, and that is; I’m not big on keywords … they drive me a bit bonkers. Bonkers is not good.

Before I switched catalogs I made sure I that:

  • I studied Kim’s lessons thoroughly (again)
  • the old catalog was organized as possible (and backed up of course)
  • I had exported all images I was going to use for Instagram or my blog so I wouldn’t have to be switching back and forth, causing mass confusion in the process
  • I knew how to set up sync with Lightroom Mobile (again), that part scared me because I viewed it as a hassle

I started this process at the beginning of October, and today I made the commitment.

It takes time and courage … and I found I had both :)

Snow Geese Migration

November 4, 2016 by Barb 2 Comments

I’d never witnessed the Snow Geese migration until earlier this autumn when we were driving through Saskatchewan. I’d heard about it from a friend but there’s no way a person can truly appreciate it unless they’ve seen it for themselves.

To say it was spectacular is an understatement, and these photos don’t do it justice. There were thousands of these birds flying in what appeared to be all directions, yet choreographed at the same time.

Instagrams New Multiple Accounts Feature!

February 10, 2016 by Barb 7 Comments

Have you heard about Instagrams new add and switch between multiple accounts? Oh joy! No more logging in and out when using different usernames.

instagrams new multiple accounts feature, Barb Brookbank

Late last year I opened a new account @barbbrookbank so I could post images from my daily life. Inevitably it stalled because it was such a pain to log in and out (and in the process lose all history of recent hashtags I was using). Plus I can set it to “Private” and only let people I trust follow it. Oh, I know, first world problems :) but what can I say?

I may have to re-download Hipstamatic because it’s so darn much fun to use for the everyday snapshot.

Oh, and how about Flipagram! My old Flipagrams actually make me teary. Sometimes I go through @keepingwiththetimes and revisit my old images … it’s quite a lovely trip down memory lane. Impromptu, imperfect, daily life images. Sigh. I want that back.

Are You Listening?

February 7, 2016 by Barb 9 Comments

I had an encounter the other day that was so subtle, in a room of 5 other people, only I noticed.

Perhaps I’m being overly sensitive, but I think not …

Are you Listening?, Table and Chair, Barb Brookbank, Keeping With the Times

My image, shot at Kim Klassen’s Studio in Rivers, Manitoba, Canada. Preset: kk_Lilly

As I said, a group of people, who are also my friends, were visiting us in our home. They are all good people whom I like, but the person I was speaking to was really what I’d call an acquaintance. Making small talk, he asked what I did while hubby golfed. Well, I stammered around a bit and then remembered one of the things I do is I indulge my passion of photography. So I told him I loved photography, and spent a lot of time taking and editing photos.

He then told me how his wife loved photography too. As I was truly interested, I asked what she liked to take photos of. Well, she loves to take shots of nature, you know, landscapes, etc.  etc.

This is where my sweet hubby mentioned that I have a blog, and share a lot of photos on it. It fell on deaf ears. He immediately mentioned his wife has a Facebook page where she posts her photos.

I then (quite out of character) offered to give him one of my cards so she and I could connect. But he simply said, well, I’ll give you one of my cards, which he proceeded to do. I took it and thanked him.

Fast forward to this morning. The hubs asked me if I was going to send my info to this person and I said, oh, probably not … . When he asked me why not, I had a hard time explaining. I had to think about it for a bit … and this is what I said:

I won’t be sending him my info because it feels hollow. He did not acknowledge my blog, and when I offered him one of my cards (which btw are artful cards made from my IG account), instead he wanted me to take one of his cards and, I guess, get back to him. Ummm … no. But thank you anyway.

I get that people are proud of their (or their spouse’s) accomplishments, and want to share them. Goodness knows I do!

But even if your end game is to show off your stuff, at least have the courtesy to pretend you’re interested in what the other person is saying. Or, hey! BE interested in what someone else is saying. How about it? do you think he was listening?

My First 5 Steps Toward Living an Artful Life

February 5, 2016 by Barb 10 Comments

I woke up feeling rested and happy this morning … so much better than yesterday where I woke up wired and tired.

And today I removed something from my life that was not serving me well, in fact it was making me forget who I am. So, out of this experience came my first 5 steps toward living an artful life.

I won’t go into detail because it was such a small thing (in the grand scale of things) like really, really small, but it was sucking the fun out of one of my greatest joys … photography. So after a particularly restless night, I decided to remove the offending “thing” from my life. I always knew it was toxic, but just wasn’t prepared for what it was doing to me … . anyway, it’s gone now, and I feel so much better.

I’ve also been reading my new book “Living Artfully” by Sandra Magsamen. I’m quite sure I’ll be quoting her often in the next year, as she writes so eloquently and seems to speak directly to me:

Living Artfully is about creating a life worth celebrating, worth remembering.

Sandra Magsamen

OK … did she say celebrating?

Goodness, I can’t seem to get away from that word! and indeed, why should I try? Looks like I’m going to have to keep it around, after all :)

Ways to live an artful life.I thought by making lists, it would help on my quest to live an artful life. So here are the first 5 steps I’ve chosen:

  1. Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken. (Oscar Wilde)
  2. If something is not serving you well, remove it from your life.
  3. Be honest. Be honest with yourself.
  4. Create from the heart.
  5. Play. Experiment. Trust.

Know exactly what you want to focus on.

Hyacinth Bulb in Glass Vase

February 3, 2016 by Barb 4 Comments

Last week I found this lovely hyacinth bulb in a glass vase (at Safeway) and was so smitten! I mean, look at those roots—I have root love!

And to keep myself accountable and in tune with my Intentions for 2016, I am pleased to tell you I purchased only one … when I really wanted at least two, since there was a white hyacinth as well (this one’s purple). But now, a week later, I’m very happy that I only bought one.

One. is. enough.

Hyacinth Bulb in Glass VaseHyacinth Bulb in Glass VaseHyacinth Bulb in Glass VaseAll these images were edited in Lightroom with kk_Eve, which reduced the overall saturation and upped the contrast.

This brings me to my quandary about backgrounds and reality. Here we are in sunny Arizona, our condo is light, bright, and airy. And very yellow. Most walls are varying shades of yellow and gold. Some feature walls are dark rust. It’s very Southwest, which I love in reality, but not so much in my still life photography. So when I posted these images on Instagram, I continued to desaturate them to the point of being dull (I’ll try to not be too harsh).

So began my quest to resolve this issue. It was clear I needed some kind of white background. One large enough to set behind my table, or against a wall, and I’m happy to report that with the help of my sweet hubby, it’s done! And I’ll share that story in another post.

Have a wonderful day.

Vintage Tools x Three

February 2, 2016 by Barb 3 Comments

Vintage tools seem to be creeping into my prop stash, but if I’m honest, it’s not really a new phenomenon.

I have an assortment of vintage tools for the garden, as well as a hammer, nuts, bolts, and a few other bits and bobs, but as you can see it may be expanding into paintbrushes.

Now, here’s where I have to admit I may be developing a bit of an addiction … oops … I do love anything that’s paint splattered … .

I found these lovelies at a garage sale here in Phoenix for $0.25/ea. Dear hubby was only slightly mystified (he’s getting used to my quirky props), and he even helped me barter for the pegboard ;) because I can’t do it!

I adore pegboard, but do you have any idea how hard it is to photograph? Goodness, I wore myself out trying to get those holes straight.

But, no worries … I present to you my paint brush bouquet:
Tools, Vintage, Series, Keeping With the TimesI wanted to create a series with an industrial tone, and Kim Klassen’s Lightroom Preset kk_Eve did the trick, lightening shadows and bumping up contrast and sharpness.Vintage Tools Series, Keeping With the TimesDo you prefer the dramatic shadows …
Vintage Tools Series, Keeping With the Times… or not?

In the following image, I placed a piece of white foam core on the right side to reduce shadows and what a huge difference it made.

I personally think it’s a bit too flat:Vintage Tools Series, Keeping With the TimesVintage Tools Series, Keeping With the Times

Hello February!

February 1, 2016 by Barb 7 Comments

Hello February! ♥

For some reason I love February … perhaps because it’s my birthday month!? and 2016 is a leap year, how fun!

For me, it’s also the beginning of another month of blogging every day like I did in November for NaBloPoMo. I must be nuts … but then again, maybe not.

I’m loosely following along with BlogHer and their monthly prompts. The first prompt is passion. Find a passion and pursue it. Maybe make it into a hobby.

I’m already pursuing photography and blogging, both of which take up a large chunk of my time, but lately I’ve been remembering how much I love word art.

I love to use it, and I love to make it. So this month I’m going to concentrate on the joy of making word art (and sharing it).

February, Hello February, Free Word Art, Keeping With the Timesbut I won’t be forgetting the joy of photography …February, Hello February, Free Word Art, Keeping With the Times

I’m also going to live this month as artfully as possible. Living an artful life is my intention for 2016, but what exactly does that mean?

Well to help figure it out, I ordered “Living Artfully: Create the Life You Imagine” by Sandra Magsamen. Many thanks to Michelle of Knee Deep in Dandelions for encouraging me to try this book. I’ll let you know how it goes. I ordered a used, hard cover copy from Amazon and am expecting it to arrive on my doorstep any day … can’t wait!

I hope you have a love-filled month! If you would like to download this word art as a printable, please click the heart ♥ and use it as a sheet to write out your February blogging goals!

Blogging Bits and Bytes: Setting Goals

January 28, 2016 by Barb 23 Comments

Setting goals is an amazing way to keep on track no matter what it is you want to accomplish.

Have you found it hard to get back on your feet after the busyness of December and the slump of January? I know I have.

Blogging Bits and Bytes: Setting Goals, Keeping With the Times

I was going over my archives and it seems I posted 9 times in December, and it’s been about the same for January. Not bad … hmmm … but I want to post more frequently.

So, with a new month around the corner, I’ve decided that I’m going to start setting goals:

My first goal is to post every single day in February.

This is what I did in November for National Blog Posting Month. In a weird way I find it gives me permission … permission to post the everyday “stuff” along with the more meatier content.

And I want to let you in on a little secret. During the month of November when I posted every day, my traffic increased by a whopping 27% from previous month(s) as well as from the month of December, which is when I typically see my highest traffic. I must admit I was pretty surprised when I saw those numbers in Google Analytics … so I guess you have to post something if you want readers ;) and it doesn’t have to be earth-shattering.

My second goal is to use my editorial calendar.

Every September I purchase a planner and by February it’s buried beneath a pile of magazines and well, you know: outta sight, outta mind … . It’s too bad because it could be a real life-saver for me. Not only for scheduling blog posts, but if I wrote all those cryptic notes-to-self in one place, at least I’d be able to find them (reading them is another thing … so today I vow to write more clearly and concisely as well.)

My favourite planner type is an 8 1/2 x 11 Flexi Planner from Orange Circle Studio. I like the large size, but they come in smaller sizes as well. My favourite thing about it is the coil binder—having it lay flat is essential. I also like the double format for each month: large squares of the month view with another section for writing more extensive notes (by month.) I can’t quite remember where I found this one … perhaps Walmart, or Chapters Indigo … however, now that I’ve found their site, I may start ordering right from them.

Do you use a planner? Do you have a favourite? and if you do, why is it your favourite? Do you use it for setting goals?

Also, starting this month I’ll also be sending out little emails with what I call “Gentle Encouragement“.

The simple definition of encouragement is:

♥ the act of making something more appealing or more likely to happen
♥ something that makes someone more determined, hopeful, or confident
♥ something that makes someone more likely to do something

… but please don’t worry, I won’t inundate you with email :)

Gentle Encouragement: Setting Goals

  • Set a few blogging goals this month and write them down.
  • Commit to writing a certain number of posts. Maybe it’s every day in February, maybe it’s twice a week. It’s up to you of course.
  • Find a planner you love, and use it. Write down ideas, thoughts, and musings. Use it as a journal, an address book, an appointment book. If a friend calls, make note of what they’re talking about so you remember. If nothing else, simply write down their dog’s name … the idea is to use it so often that you can’t be without it. Keep everything in it … like receipts, clothing tags, photos (something like a Smash Book) and I guarantee that by the end of the year you’ll have a treasure that you never saw coming … and you may also be blogging more regularly. I’ll keep you up-to-date on how it’s going for me. If you decide to do this, and would like to share your posts, please feel free to add them to the link-up here as we’d all love to see them!

Have a wonderful day!

PS:

I included the above word art as a free printable in my Blogging Bits and Bytes newsletter. If you’d like to receive future newsletters and access to the occasional freebie, you can sign up here.

Looking forward to February …

I believe I can do it ;)

National Blog Posting Month – 15 Tips for Surviving It

November 30, 2015 by Barb 14 Comments

Today I’m celebrating and sharing 15 tips on how I not only survived, but thrived, during National Blog Posting Month!

Woo Hoo! Happy Happy Dance over here … I did it! I posted every single day in November.

High Fives all around. Time to party!

15 Tips on Surviving National Blog Posting Month, Keeping With the Times

I wish I could say I had been organized and prepared, with tons of content squirrelled away, ready to go … but I cannot.

I did not even know I was going to participate until November 1st when I saw Xanthe Berkeley’s post on Instagram … in fact, I’d never even heard of National Blog Posting Month. Then I saw that Kim Klassen was also participating, and it sounded like a great challenge, so I jumped right in with my first post NaBloPoMo Otherwise Known as Madness. It seems like ages ago … .

So how did I do it? First of all I was determined … then …

15 Tips on Surviving National Blog Posting Month

  1. Commit. Set your intention. Be positive … see it as an exercise that will strengthen your blogging muscle.
  2. Give yourself permission on really hard days to simply post a photo and say “Hi … how are you? I’m so happy you’re here reading my blog, thank you!”
  3. Use prompts. I used one prompt from the BlogHer prompt pool. My post What I Did This Morning (and most mornings) and What Does Goatsbeard Have to Do With It (take that Google) was a result … a bit silly and goofy, but I got it done (and had a little fun.)
  4. Rely on your strengths. My strength is photography. I have no problem taking a photo a day. Once I have a photo, the rest will follow.
  5. Dig into the photo archives and bring content out of the dark that may never have made it otherwise. Don’t worry that it may be old content. I shared a mushroom and wild rice soup recipe I’d been meaning to post for months and months.
  6. Start first thing in the morning (or when you feel the most productive).  You may not finish it, but by the time you go back to it later in the day it won’t be so daunting.
  7. Write at the same time every day.
  8. Set a time limit. This eliminates agonizing – get it done already. Ignore SEO. SEO drove me crazy this month. I’ll explain later … hey! another post idea!
  9. Write about what you love. Write down everything you can think of – throw it on the page – editing comes later.
  10. Get that title figured out.
  11. Edit photos in down time.
  12. Try to work ahead by at least one day (I’ve already admitted I did not do this).
  13. Write a heartfelt post, reveal some inner thoughts, share your vulnerabilities.
  14. Just start. Follow leads. Search online. Join memes. Instagram is endless inspiration.
  15. On an extremely busy or hectic day, put in a “place holder” … a paragraph with just enough info, explain your dilemma, then go back later (maybe even a day later) and elaborate. At least you have a blog post holder for that day. I would not recommend doing this too often … once maybe when you are desperate (which I was one Sunday … we were visiting family and I didn’t want to lose one precious moment).

So there you have it! How I survived and thrived whilst posting every day for 30 days. Will I do it again? I am not sure :)

I Had Good Intentions

November 27, 2015 by Barb 3 Comments

I got out of bed this morning with good intentions … I had a great blog post in mind for #nablopomo, and I was ready to tackle it (after coffee and breakfast).

But life being what it is, time slipped away. It’s not that I/we wasted it. The hubs was home and had seen my new curtains.

Being the type A personality he is, he wanted to tackle the rest of the job which meant a) remove the old brackets, and b) order new blinds/shades. Two hours later we were finished with the blinds and it was (way past) time for lunch. I wasn’t showered or dressed.

Good Intentions

After that I’m not sure what happened. I spent a bit of time preparing some eucalyptus for a wreath, and then decided I should create a little flatlay for IG.

Next I dragged in the old paint splotched table I bought this past summer and tried a few more arrangements …

… and now the sun is almost setting! I kid you not! Sunset here is 4:21 … aack. Time to get supper on.

My Art is not Frivolous

November 25, 2015 by Barb 22 Comments

I often wonder why I do what I do, and is it frivolous?

frivolous \

  • of little weight or importance
  • lacking in seriousness
  • irresponsibly self-indulgent

I puzzle over why I get up in the morning so eager to set up a still life and take photos …

my art is not frivolous, "to live life as artfully as possible" (quote by Henry Miller) Keeping With the Times

But it seems I’ve been staging “still life” images my entire life. To me “still life is real life is still life.” To have a chippy chair sitting in the dining room, an apron draped over the top, and treasured linens stacked on the seat is calming. And those poppy seed heads … I grew them, I picked them, and I dried them. What is more real than that?

my art is not frivolous

my art is not frivolous, "to live life as artfully as possible" (quote by Henry Miller) Keeping With the Times

Right from our first apartment I’ve decorated my home; from the kitchen, to the living room, to the bedroom. I’ve always liked to surround myself with pretty things and while the objects have changed over the years, the passion has not … in fact it has grown to such proportions I can hardly contain myself. And it’s because I now love photography.

I can no longer dismiss this (photography) passion as “frivolous“. It’s become as much a part of my life as creating a comfortable home for my self, my husband, and my children and grandchildren. It’s as important as a home-made meal … as important as freshly baked cookies coming straight out of the oven … and as important as a bouquet of wildflowers sitting on the windowsill for no other reason than to delight the senses.

It’s as important as anything I do because it fills me up, and then spills over into my life.

It gives me purpose at a time when I could be feeling lost. I could be stressing over the fact that I’m aging and my face and body are definitely not what they used to be. But I don’t have time. Where would I find the time to stand in front of the mirror agonizing over sags and wrinkles when there’s a still life waiting to be brought into the world? Oh, and before I bring that still life into the world, I may have to bake something, or paint a background, or find the perfect new semi-opaque curtains for the dining room … the list is endless.

my art is not frivolous, "to live life as artfully as possible" (quote by Henry Miller) Keeping With the Times

And I mustn’t trivialize the fact that I’ve spent over six years learning how to use a dslr so that I may bring these images to life in as creative a way as possible. I can’t count the hours I’ve spent learning this craft … and I cannot think of one other thing in which I’ve invested so much of my time and effort (unless it’s my blog.)

That’s why the quote by Henry Miller spoke to me … it sums up how I want to live my life. I want to live as artfully as possible … and that’s not frivolous.

Hem Curtains Without Sewing

November 24, 2015 by Barb 3 Comments

Hem curtains in 10 seconds flat without sewing … for real! Here’s an easy and fast (hack) when drapes are long and time is short.

For weeks I’d been trying to update the curtain situation in our dining room. We’d had the same metal mini-horizontals and cotton topper for over 10 years, and I was so done with it.

However, since the task to change everything seemed daunting, I called in a “decorator” to help. Ummm, let’s just say it didn’t go well; her tastes differed vastly from mine. Vastly.

So I went out and bought panels with grommets, at the time thinking I could hem them myself and all would be well. Not … .

Now, I’m a good sewer and have done a lot of sewing, but those panels were cheap (which is not a bad thing) and when I started to cut them I discovered the grain was crooked and the curtain itself was so slippery it wouldn’t stay on the ironing board … (insert scream face). Never have I made a quicker trip to the thrift store to donate something. I just wanted them to be gone (a heartfelt apology to the hubs who spent a fair amount of time helping me find said panels).

Then this past week I came across some lovely *side panels at Jysk (a Danish retail chain), and they’re gorgeous!

They were just what I was looking for: white, crinkly, semi-opaque, and cheap at $10.00/panel! They brighten up my dining room and make for a beautiful backdrop …

Hem Curtains

… and as I was walking out of the store a thought occurred to me … they don’t even need to be hemmed! Since they aren’t too bulky it would be easy to simply tie them in a knot … it takes about 10 seconds per panel. Voila! Am I brilliant or what ;)

Hem Curtains Without SewingProof that it doesn’t have to be expensive, or complicated …
Hem Curtains Without SewingWhen open, the panels are wide enough to fit across the entire width of my windows. Of course when they are pulled closed, the bottoms will “puddle” on the floor, which I don’t mind since I will only close them when I’m trying to take photos.

My next plan of attack is to install light filtering cellular shades and I’ll never have to close the panels. Perfect. So next time, before you automatically think you have to hem curtains … think again.

The side panels are “Tina” 53″ x 96″ with hidden tabs … and yes … 100% polyester … .

Autumn is Definitely on the Way Out

November 18, 2015 by Barb 5 Comments

As much as I am in denial, autumn is definitely on the way out. Pinecones and holly berries are waiting in the wings, along with shortbread and sugar cookies.

Last night’s blustery snow squall, and today’s freezing temperatures are the cold hard reality.

I just got back from shopping for groceries and my hands are so cold! I neglected to wear gloves, but at least I was wearing shoes and socks, which is something I put off for as long as possible. Sandals, sandals, sandals … to the end … brrrrrr.

So now, I shall bid adieu to autumn with a few more pressed beauties:autumn's leaving, Keeping With the Times… and another one for Frankenstein …

Supporting Actors

November 17, 2015 by Barb 7 Comments

The prompt in The Studio|Online is about allowing the supporting actors (i.e. tables, etc) be the star for once. As usual, it’s open to interpretation, so I’m letting “the chair” shine.

I’ve had this little beauty for a few years and I don’t believe I’ve given it the respect it deserves. Somehow it got relegated to a bedroom in the basement and as they say “outta sight, outta mind”.

Well, no more. Meet Ms. Chippy Chair.

Supporting Actors

She’s really quite lovely.

Supporting Actors, The Studio Online, Focus on the "Table"

And so are these apples … I still have apples I picked from my neighbours orchard last September, and I don’t want them to go to waste. So, what to do …

Supporting Actors, Apple Sauce, The Studio Online, Focus on the "Table"I think making apple sauce is once again on the agenda.

Since most of the apples I picked were teeny tiny, I gave up with the peeling part and found I liked it much better. That went for the pies and crisps too … no more peeling for me. I also discovered that after a whirl in the blender the peel virtually disappears. All those years of peeling … what was I thinking?

How do you make applesauce?

Thirty Days Hath November and Nablopomo

November 16, 2015 by Barb 8 Comments

OK, so it just occurred to me that we are halfway through November, and that means halfway through nablopomo as well. And bonus … I just realized there’s only 30 days!

I’ve posted every day for 15 days, and that’s a record for me … hope it’s not sounding like a broken record around here …

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have 31,
Except for February all alone,
It has 28 each year,’
but 29 each leap year.
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November
All the rest have 31,
Except for February.
Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November
All the rest have thirty-one
But February’s a different one

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not wishing away my time. On the contrary. I want to hold on to November and all the beauty it offers.

I’m actually feeling pretty energized by this exercise, and so far there has been only one day where I truly struggled.

Ideas are spinning around in my head all the time and this has given me permission to release them … even if they’re not perfect, so

  • I have a recipe I’ve been meaning to publish but I keep putting it on the back burner (snort).
  • I have an update on my “Blogging Bits and Bytes”.
  • And, I have this fear that if I miss a day I might have to apologize … that’s enough to keep me awake at night ;)
