Quail Eggs for Friday Finds

January 2, 2015 by Barb 24 Comments

Quail eggs were not on my radar when I stopped at the “No Frills” Superstore to pick up some last minute supplies a few weeks ago, but there they were, on the shelf with all the other eggs … who knew? Certainly not me! I gasped, a photo opportunity in the making …

I was enchanted by the tiny size, the lovely patterns, and the variations in colour. They went from brown to blue and everything in-between.

I quickly set them in my cart and carried on … it’s not that I didn’t have a ton of things to do when I got home, but I dropped everything and spent over an hour photographing these beauties.

To demonstrate scale, I used peppercorns in my little scene. Everyone knows the size of a peppercorn, so when set side-by-side, it becomes obvious as to how small these eggs really are when compared to regular eggs.

Of course I had to cook up a few … steamed in a double boiler in one of my new dishes …

Such lovely images, Barb. The quail eggs are exquisite. Those beautiful, delicate shells are things of beauty. I have a German aunt who pickles them with dill, and serves them as nibbles with drinks. They’re delicious! All the best for a very happy new year, Bonny

To die for!!!! Save those shells. And if you hadn’t thought about it ‘blow out’ the eggs and save them whole. Maybe you should go back to the store and buy a whole bunch and sell them. Maybe someone should open a ‘co-op’ Prop shop online. Gosh the ideas are just flowing this AM…. I’m curious, did they taste any different?

What fantastic lay-outs you made with these pretty eggs. Nicer to look at than eat, I always find.

love these! We’ve raised quails since Sept and I just took them back to the farmer last week! (little beasts they were) BUT the fresh eggs will be missed! I see I missed a great opportunity for still life images again! haha!

Hi Barb … such wonderful photos of your darling quail eggs. Isn’t it amazing how we stop to buy that “must have” for our photographs? :~) But that is what I just love being behind that camera … looking for unexpected beauty!! Wishing you another creative new year!

Oh wow…I would have done the same thing as you had I seen these in the store! But I’m curious, after I was done photographing them…what would they taste like? Chicken eggs…just smaller?
