Have you ever heard of people celebrating a Birthday Month?
I can’t remember when or where I first heard the term, but it got stuck in my brain, and for the last two years I’ve jokingly referred to February as my Birthday Month.
After doing a little research, I found there isn’t a lot out there to either support or refute the idea … so it’s every girl for themselves I say!
I did however, have a bit of a chuckle over the definitions at The Urban Dictionary (a crowdsourced online dictionary of slang words and phrases that was founded in 1999 as a parody of Dictionary.com and Vocabulary.com by then-college freshman Aaron Peckham ~ Wikipedia), which said:
- Due to scheduling conflicts and belated responses, when gifts continue to be given in recognition of ones birthday over a lengthy period of time, sometimes as much as a month or more. A really great occurrence that stretches ones birthday perks out indefinitely.
- Its your Birthday month till the day of your Birthday, after that your birthday month is over.
- Exactly a month till your birthday: November 6 is the first day of birthday month for people with a birthday on December 6, etc.
- When one is in the state known as the birthday month. Any month that your birthday is in, and you party or do cool sh** for the entire month as much as is physically possible.
To address #1, I did start receiving gifts in January (no complaints.) I tend to like #2, although someone with a birthday on the 1st of the month may not! #3 might work, but it’s not my favourite (too confusing) and #4 is spot on :)
I would like to add my own point:
#5. Everyone must wish the birthday person “Happy Birthday” as early as possible on the exact day of their birthday. There will be no excuses, or forgiveness, for late birthday wishes. Ever. *
*oh, and that has never happened, but the hubs and I nervously start wishing each other Happy Birthday about 3 days in advance ;)

Happy Birthday Month! (Is that early enough?) I have a friend who, for milestone birthdays (such as a new decade), gives herself a birthday year. She buys herself a present or does something special on the date of her birth (for example, the 6th) every month for the whole year until her next birthday. Enjoy your celebration(s)!!
Thank you León! It’s definitely early enough … I had to reassure the hubs that I was kidding … kinda, sorta, ahem ;) but I think a year like your friend’s idea is fantastic … I declare that for me, it will now be on the half decades (lol)!!

I can’t remember when I first started celebrating my birthday month- maybe always? My birthday is the 31st- so once the month begins, everything leads up to that day. When I referred to it being my birthday month years ago, my friends started teasing me about it- but I see nothing wrong with celebrating all month long! I thought everyone thought that way- and I think we should all celebrate as much as possible! And eat dessert first! Happy Birthday Month , Barb!?

This is so fun Barb! This year I’m celebrating all year, simply because it is a REAL big one, and I’m (1) thrilled to be alive, healthy and enjoying life, and (2) there’s just too much fun in retirement years not to celebrate. I doubt I do this next year, but this year, I will. I’m happy you’re celebrating all month!

Here’s one even better than just a month….my daughter begins the Birthday Countdown SIX months ahead! Yes indeed, on March 4th she will call and ask if I realize just what day it is. No…nothing special, right? No Mom, it’s six months until my Birthday!!! Ah yes, how could I, her Mother, forget!!!! So then it begins. Now, she is an only child so maybe that accounts for it. Or, it is simply her personality. Maybe you could start that too, Barb!!

Well Happy Birthday, Barb! This is what I like to do: I wear my birthstone (earrings and/or ring) during my birthday month. I do the same thing during the birthday month for our son and daughter. Best wishes for a month filled with fun.
Are you serious? (I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not; praying it’s the former). God help your friends and family if it is not. I found your post, BTW, by searching “deluded and narcissistic friend says its her birthday month” to get some advice on how to deal with such a gauche proclamation made by a supposed adult. But I can now clearly see it’s even being propagated by septuagenarians. Wow. Just wow. Please hug your husband for me, God, bless his heart.
